Wives of avid anglers do not have a happy life. Unless they have been infected by their husbands' passion for fishing and go fishing with them, they have to constantly endure the fact that their other halves do not spend time with them. Spouses of sea trout (Latin: Salmo trutta trutta) hunters have it the worst. They have to come to terms with the fact that their husbands, instead of going to New Year's Eve balls with them and celebrating the welcome of the new year, are out on Pomeranian rivers.

The first of January marks the beginning of the sea trout season. A season that has been awaited since October, because that is when the protection period for sea trout begins in most Polish waters. The season, the opening of which can not be missed by any seasoned sea trout angler. Thus, on New Year's Day, the banks of the Parsęta, Leba, Rega and other Pomeranian rivers are lined with anglers. Only some of them manage to catch one or more sea trout, as this is a task requiring considerable skill and sometimes a lot of luck. Sea trout bite less frequently than most other fish, so you need to know well in which parts of the river to find them, what bait to offer them and how to give it.

Fly fishing for sea trout is not as popular as for other salmonids, such as trout. However, there are anglers who prefer this very way of hunting. Fly-fishing for sea trout was specialized in by Edmund Antropik, who died a few years ago, a guru for many fishing generations. On sea trout rivers, however, you can meet mostly spinning anglers. They usually fish with large spinners and spoons, less often with crankbaits. Rubbers are also sometimes effective, although not as much as hard lures.

Adult sea trout live in the sea, they enter rivers to spawn. They do this in autumn. The female lays her eggs in a nest she has dug out. The young after two-three years reach a length of several centimeters, then they swim to the sea. There they live for another two-three years, until they are fully sexually mature. They are then ready to enter the river to spawn. They perform it several times in their lives.

While in the sea, sea trout have a silvery bright color, after entering the river their scales gradually turn dull. That is why the sea trout that go to spawn are called silvers, while those that return are called kelts.

In appearance, the sea trout very much resembles the brook trout. This is not a coincidence, as the brook trout is a biological variety of sea trout, but living only in fresh waters and not reaching such large sizes. The second stationary variety of sea trout living in Polish waters is the lake trout.

The heaviest sea trout caught so far in Poland was 14.70kg. The lucky hunter was Wieslaw Flis in 2006. On the other hand, in the "Angler's World" competition "Polish record in the length of a fish" Wieslaw Flis also leads. In 2006 he caught a sea trout with a length of 113cm. The protective dimension of sea trout is 35 centimeters, the daily limit - 2 pieces, but few anglers manage to catch so many in one day. In addition to the Baltic Sea, sea trout can be found in the North Sea and the White Sea.
